Stree 2 Writer Calls Villain Sarkata 'Most Warped Form Of Patriarchy'

Stree 2, starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, is creating a heavy buzz at the box office as the movie is set to surpass ₹400 crore mark today, August 26. While the performance of the actors was widely praised by the critics and the audience, the villain, Sarkata and the cameo of Akshay Kumar stole the limelight. In a recent interview, the writer of the horror-comedy discussed how these characters in Dinesh Vijan's Supernatural Universe symbolise the various aspects of society. Writer Niren Bhatt mentioned that Sarkata is the symbol of all that is wrong about patriarchy.

In an interview with PTI, Bhatt, who has also written other horror-comedy movies in the franchise, Bhediya and Munjya, said people complain that there is a lot of humour but less horror or vice versa. Offering a clarification he said these are not horror films where actual ghosts are haunting people. All our ghosts are fallacies of our society. Sarkata is the "most warped form of patriarchy".

"Stree is the symbol of matriarchy, she is not a witch. Bhediya is the protector of the forests. We have designed these characters in a certain way. We are not talking about hocus pocus or spirits out of the blue," the writer told PTI. While Stree revolved around a female ghost, who was wronged in her mortal life, the sequel is a follow-up which focuses on a headless villain called Sarkata with a connection to the eponymous character.

Stree 2, which follows Sarkata abducting women with an independent voice, symbolises the recent incident that took place in Kolkata where a doctor was raped and murdered and the Justice Hema Committee report on women's exploitation in Malayalam cinema. Reacting to it, Bhatt said that it is unfortunate that these incidents have become a norm. "This happens every day. It's just this one incident that has been highlighted by the media and we are so shaken about. I follow current trends very closely. You know this is happening, but you try to think about something else tomorrow because you also have a life to lead and you can't always think that you are living in such horrible times. But it all keeps playing in the back of our mind," he added.

Meet Sunil Kumar who played Sarkata in Stree 2

Sunil Kumar aka Sunny Jatt (as per his Instagram profile) played the role of Sarkata in Stree 2. Director Amar Kaushik, during an interview with Bollywood Hungama, shared that his casting team found Kumar and they finalised him based on his height and physique. The director added that they used body shots of Kumar, while the face of Sarkata was generated through CGI. According to his Instagram handle, Kumar mostly spends his time playing volleyball and handball. He was part of the WWE Tryout in 2019.

Apart from Rajkummar and Shraddha, the movie also stars Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurana and Abhishek Banerjee in key roles.
