Viral/ Tareekh pe tareekh...: CJI DY Chandrachud uses Sunny Deol's iconic Damini dialogue on adjournments

The Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, has made a Bollywood reference in court, albeit in a somber context regarding the increased adjournment requests.

Earlier today (November 3), the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, in a sombre context, referred to a rather popular line from the 1993 Bollywood film Damini as he asserted his point in court. The evergreen "tareekh pe tareekh" line referenced by the Chief Justice of India, was spoken on screen by Sunny Deol.

As per a Live Law report, Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud asserted today how the court would not be a "tareekh pe tareekh court". This was in reference to the increasing number of adjournments being requested by lawyers over urgently listed matters, brought to court on their behest.

CJI said, "On the one hand matters are listed on expedited basis, on the other hand, they're mentioned, then they get listed and then they're adjourned. I request the members of the bar to not seek adjournments unless really really necessary. This cannot become a tareekh pe tareekh court. This defeats trust of citizens in our court."

Sunny Deol's evergreen 'tareekh pe tareekh' line

The tareekh pe tareekh line was said by Sunny Deol in 1993 film Damini. The socially relevant production saw Meenakshi Seshadri's Damini Gupta fight tooth and nail against her own marital home to bring justice to house help Urmi who is gangraped by her brother-in-law and his friends.

Sunny Deol essays the role of  Advocate Govind Srivastava who joins forces with Damini as she strives for justice. The tareekh pe tareekh line is said by his character when their case in the film is met with multiple delays.
