Why Does Bollywood Actor Anil Kapoor Feature In TIME's 100 AI List? Explained

Anil Kapoor has unlocked the achievement of being the only Indian to be featured in the TIME magazine list of people who made an impact in the world of AI. The list was announced on September 6 and also features Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Hollywood actress  Scarlett Johanson. While the Slumdog Millionaire star celebrates the feat, it has sparked curiosity among fans about what the actor has to do with artificial intelligence. 

Why was Anil Kapoor mentioned in Time100 AI list? 

The TIME 100 Most Influential People in AI lists a hundred names from across the globe working in all fields of life who have made an impact on Artificial Intelligence. Anil Kapoor's mention comes a year after his legal win in September 2023. The actor filed a complaint against the those missing his voice, name, image or phrase without permission for commercial gains. The actor took the drastic step as his catchphrase from the 1985 film Yudh ‘Jhakkas’ was being rampantly circulated in the form of morphed videos and emojis.

The Delhi High Court passed an interim order against several websites alleging unauthorised use of his personality. After his landmark victory, the Mr India actor spoke to Variety about the reasons of filing the lawsuit. He shared, "I’m very happy with this court order, which has come in my favour, and I think it’s very progressive and great for not only me but for other actors also. Because of the way technology and the AI technology, which is evolving every day [and] which can completely take advantage of and be misused commercially, as well as where my image, voice, morphing, GIFs and deep fakes are concerned, I can straight away, if that happens, send a court order and injunction and they have to pull it down.”

Anil Kapoor added, “It’s not only for me. Today, I’m there to protect myself, but when I’m not there, the family should have the right to protect my [personality] and gain from it in future. My intention is not to interfere with anyone’s freedom of expression or to penalise anyone. My intent was to seek protection of my personality rights and prevent any misuse for commercial gains, particularly in the current scenario with rapid changes in technology and tools like artificial intelligence."

Anil Kapoor is on cloud nine as he has been honoured for his significant contributions in fighting against the limitations of artificial intelligence (AI). The recognition by TIME seems fated as we hear about a film that Kapoor is currently developing - a film about the potential of AI to inspire creativity and change lives for the better. Taking to Instagram, Anil shared his excitement with fans by sharing the pictures along with a message.

The message read, "With immense gratitude and a humble heart, I find myself among the visionaries shaping the future of Artificial Intelligence. This recognition by TIME is not just an honor, but a moment of reflection on the journey of innovation and creativity. Thank you for recognizing this endeavor @time." As soon as he shared the post, fans and industry members congratulated him in the comment section. Farah Khan Kunder wrote, “Omg!! Congratulations Papajiiiii!! Aapka TIME aa gaya.” Anil's daughter and actor Sonam Kapoor dropped heart emojis. Anil's Fighter co-star Akshay Oberoi commented, "SO COOL! SO WELL DESERVED!"
