Dharmendra was the reason behind Neelam Kothari-Bobby Deol's breakup?

Neelam Kothari’s relationship with Bobby Deol fetched several headlines in the late 1980s. The Animal actor was dating Neelam even before making his debut in the Hindi film industry in the 1995 film Barsaat. Their relationship started way before his debut, at a time when the actress had been in the industry for 11 years. In a previous, interview the Hum Saath Saath Hain actress revealed the reason behind her split with Bobby Deol.

Neelam Kothari and Bobby Deol’s relationship received significant attention from the media, and so did their breakup. While the actors kept their silence on the matter, reports claimed that Bobby’s father Dharmendra was the reason behind their split. However, in an interview with Stardust, the actress dismissed all such rumours. She said, “Believe me, this decision has nothing to do with either family. I just kept thinking about ultimately ending up as a star-wife – and the thought nagged me so much that it began haunting me.”

Neelam was already working in films before Bobby Deol made his debut and the thought of him getting into movies, scared him. She recalled, “You know the thought of getting involved with a guy who’s getting into films...he hasn’t even started....I just felt scared.” The actress added, “Terribly scared. I can’t explain the fear, I thought, might as well finish it now. I couldn’t bear the thought of something going wrong later. It would have been too late. I see it happening all around me, to all the star wives. Okay, so I decided late, very late, I agree. But still, not too late.”

Neelam Kothari and Bobby Deol dated for more than 5 years before calling it off. The actress later got married to Rishi Sethia in 2000. She then got married to actor Samir Soni in 2011 and adopted a daughter Ahana Soni, two years later. Bobby Deol tied the knot with Tanya Ahuja in 1996 and has two grown-up sons Aryaman Deol and Dharam Deol.
