Shobha Kapoor: Air Hostess Who Married Jeetendra, Now At The Center Of ALTBalaji POCSO Case

Producer Ekta Kapoor and her mother Shobha Kapoor have been in the headlines due to recent legal trouble. They face charges under the POCSO Act for allegedly depicting inappropriate scenes involving minor girls in an episode of the web series Gandi Baat, which airs on ALT Balaji. The case pertains to season 6 of the series. ALT Balaji has faced legal scrutiny before for its adult content, gaining a reputation for producing controversial shows. While Ekta Kapoor often grabs the spotlight in these cases, her mother also plays a key role in the production of Balaji telefilms.

Who is Ekta Kapoor’s mother Shobha?

Shobha Kapoor is an Indian producer of television, films, and web series. She began her career as an air hostess and later married the popular 80s actor Jeetendra. They have two children, Ekta Kapoor and Tusshar Kapoor. Jeetendra founded Balaji Telefilms, a production company for films and TV shows, which Shobha Kapoor now runs alongside her daughter, Ekta Kapoor, as its Managing Director.

Shobha played a key role in the growth of Balaji Telefilms, overseeing its administrative and production operations. Not many know but, she was involved in the creation of major TV shows like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki, Kaahin Kissii Roz, Kalash, Kasautii Zindagii Kay, Kahiin To Hoga, and Kasamh Se. In 2001, Balaji Motion Pictures was launched as a subsidiary of Balaji Telefilms, focused on film production and distribution. ALTBalaji, a video-on-demand platform, was launched in April 2017.

As per reports, Shobha holds a 48% stake in Balaji Telefilms. In 2017, Reliance Industries acquired a 25% stake in the company for ₹413 crore. Shobha has been instrumental in building Balaji Telefilms from the ground up. In 2023, Shobha Kapoor and her daughter Ekta stepped down from their leadership roles at ALTBalaji to focus on main operations.

FIR filed against Shobha Kapoor over the years

As per ANI, In 2020, a complaint was filed against producers Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor in a Muzaffarpur court, accusing them of insulting army personnel and their families in the web series XXX on the Alt Balaji OTT platform. Another FIR was lodged the same year, alleging disrespect towards the national emblem and Hindu gods in the same series. 

The Supreme Court also criticised the show for objectionable content. Recently, the producers have come under scrutiny for allegedly depicting inappropriate scenes involving minor girls in an episode of the ALT Balaji series Gandi Baat, which has led the court to summon both Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor for questioning on October, 24.
