Alec Baldwin Rust Shooting Case: Who Was Victim Halyna Hutchins Killed On Set?

Halyna Hutchins, a cinematographer, was shot and killed on October 21, 2021, on the New Mexico set of the film Rust, starring Alec Baldwin. According to reports, Hutchins died after Baldwin accidentally fired a prop gun that was loaded with live ammunition. She was behind the camera supervising the take when the incident happened. Apart from her, director Joel Souza also sustained injury.

Now, three years after the unfortunate incident, the trial of Baldwin began on July 9 for involuntary manslaughter. As the trial has begun, here's all you need to know about Halyna Hutchins.

Who was Halyna Hutchins?

She was 42 when she died. She was a Ukrainian cinematographer who had worked on more than 30 feature movies, short movies and TV miniseries. She grew up on a remote Soviet military base and worked on documentary films in Eastern Europe before studying film in Los Angeles and embarking on a career in the entertainment world. She started as an associate producer with the 2006 movie World's Tallest Man. She has also worked on movies, including Blindfire, Archenemy and Darlin'.  She is survived by her kid.

What happened

Baldwin was rehearsing for a scene in a small church with a revolver when the incident took place. The shot struck hutching in the chest and Souza's shoulder. She was immediately taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital via helicopter but was pronounced dead. Souza survived and was discharged hours later.

Charges against Alec Baldwin

The actor has been charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter. According to a report in AP, it has never been officially determined who brought the live rounds that killed Hutchins. Prosecutors at the previous trial of Rust Armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed alleged that she was responsible. She was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to the same 18 months in prison Baldwin faces.
