Barbie 2, Ken spin-off in the making? Margot Robbie talks about future prospects of a sequel

Greta Gerwig's Barbie became the highest-grossing movie of 2023 worldwide with over $1.4 billion in earnings. It featured Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. After its massive success, there have been speculations about its sequel. If rumors are to be believed, there is still a Barbie 2 and a Ken spin-off at work. 

Margot Robbie reacts to rumours of Barbie's sequel 

While speaking to Variety, the Barbie actress said, “It's funny, that knee-jerk reaction in this day and age for everyone to immediately ask about a sequel. I don't think it was like that 20 years ago. This wasn't designed to be a trilogy.”

She further added, “Everything went into Barbie, and that's how Greta works.”

Explaining the prospects of a sequel, Margot explained, “Greta finishes every movie empty, feeling like she could never make another movie because she put everything she had into that one. So I don't know what it would take to fill that cup up again for her. Or for us. I think Warners would also agree. I don't know what more could even look like. We want to make more films that have the effect that Barbie has. I don't know if it has to be Barbie 2. Why can't it be another big, original, bold idea where we get an amazing filmmaker, a big budget to play with, and the trust of a huge conglomerate behind them to go and really play? I want to do that.”

All about Greta’s busy schedule 

Director Greta Gerwig, the creative force behind Barbie's success, is currently engaged in a Chronicles of Narnia film for Netflix, indicating a busy schedule. While this may pose challenges for an immediate Barbie sequel, the door remains ajar for future possibilities.
