The makers of Eileen dropped their trailer earlier today. The film starring Anne Hathaway and Shea Whigham in the lead roles promises to be a pulpy mystery-thriller. Eileen is directed by William Oldroyd.

Eileen based on a booker prize-shortlisted novel
The trailer begins with the visuals of a cold environment of women’s prison, particularly focusing on Eileen (Whigham), a employee at the prison whose life gradually takes a shift after the arrival of a criminal counselor Rebecca (Hathaway). As Eileen slowly forms a bond with Rebecca, exploring newer facets to her personality, the trailer builds up intrigue around Rebecca’s character, giving an impression that there is more to Rebecca’s intentions than it appears on the surface.

Eileen is based on a bestselling novel of the same title, written by popular author Ottessa Moshfegh. Eileen was published in 2015, and was shortlisted for the coveted Booker Prize the following year. Moshfegh also adapted the book into a screenplay, collaborating with her husband Luke Goebel.

Eileen had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival 2023
Besides Hathaway and Whigham, the film also features Thomasin Mckenzie and Sam Nivola in prominent roles. Eileen also marks the directorial return of filmmaker William Oldroyd who made his debut 7 years ago with the 2016 film Lady Macbeth.

Eileen had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival which was held earlier in January this year. Eileen is scheduled to first have a limited release in the US on December 1, before it goes for a global release the following week on December 8.
