Superhero movie discourse appears to be in a perpetual state of flux, with a large number of supporters and opponents. Several directors have been requested to offer their opinions on the matter after Martin Scorsese's remarks about the Marvel Cinematic Universe went viral on multiple occasions. It appears that Michael Mann has a different perspective.

Michael Mann believes the audience is getting tired of superhero movies

During his appearance on The Playlist's The Discourse podcast, Michael Mann discussed Marvel Studios and the possibility of producing a superhero movie in the future. The filmmaker said while he personally doesn’t have any issues with these films, audiences are getting tired of it.

Michael said, “There’s some studies that I’ve done within the industry… people are kind of getting tired of superhero movies and are becoming more interested in pictures like Heat, if you like.” In other words, he probably won't ever direct a superhero movie, but not because he has any deep-seated objections to superhero movies.

“I only make films that I feel passionate about and that placed me a little bit more on the frontier. That’s where I do my best work. I’d like to be a journeyman director, go from film to film to film, but I don’t think I’d be very good at it. It doesn’t get my blood running,” said Michael.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Gunn said, “I think there is such a thing as superhero fatigue. I think it doesn’t have anything to do with superheroes. It has to do with the kind of stories that get to be told, and if you lose your eye on the ball, which is character.
