Joe Manganiello and Sofía Vergara released a joint statement in 2023 sharing that they've decided to part ways after seven years of marriage. Joe filed the divorce papers in court and cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their separation. Earlier this year, Sofia in an interview with El País revealed that their marriage ended because her young husband wanted to have kids, whereas she didn't want to become an older mother. However, now Joe has refuted the claims and narrated his side of the story following his divorce from Sofia.
Joe Manganiello shared that the couple 'grew apart'
In an interview with Men's Journal, the 47-year-old actor clarified that kids were not the reason behind their separation. He admitted that he did want to have children but their disagreement "wasn't inevitably why everything ended." They did try to have it for the first and a half years. The duo even had a "huge conversation" over the topic of kids while they dated. Joe recalled promising his ex-wife that he would never leave if their plans of having kids did not pan out as per him. "I swore to her that I would never leave if it didn't work out. And I didn't," he said.
He shared how the divorce affected his perception of his character and shared their divorce happened because they "grew apart" and "sometimes that happens," he added.
“To be painted as if I had some sort of midlife crisis, and after nine years, turned to somebody and gave them an ultimatum of, 'Do this potentially unhealthy thing to your body, or else I'm gone'? That’s never who I was," he concluded.
