Shannen Doherty, Star Of Beverly Hills 90210, Dies Aged 53 After Cancer Spreads To Her Bones

Shannen Doherty, who has acted in both TV shows and movies, died on July 13 after years of living with breast cancer. The report of her death was confirmed by PEOPLE. Doherty's longtime publicist  Leslie Sloane shared a statement calling the late actress a "devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend".

Family requests for privacy to grieve in peace

Doherty's publicist confirmed the news of her death to PEOPLE and said, "It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease." The statement added, "The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace."

Shannen Doherty, 53, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015

Known for her performance in Beverly Hills 90210, Doherty was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. In April 2017, she had gone into remission, but by 2019, the cancer returned. In 2020, she announced her diagnosis of metastatic stage 4 cancer and by June 2023 it spread to her brain for which she had to undergo surgery.

In an interview with PEOPLE last year in November, she candidly spoke about her Stage 4 cancer which had then spread to her bones. “I’m not done with living. I’m not done with loving. I’m not done with creating. I’m not done with hopefully changing things for the better,” she told PEOPLE. "I’m just not — I’m not done.”

Shannen Doherty was part of movies such as Fortress, Darkness of Man and Burning Palms. She was also known for her roles in TV shows, such as Beverly Hills 90210,  Riverdale, Saturday Night Live and BH90210.
