The Nun II becomes highest-grossing horror movie in India in 2023, beats Evil Dead Rise

The Nun II was released on September 7. The horror flick comes from the long line of The Conjuring films, which debuted with The Conjuring (2013). The James Wan franchise has slowly become successful with entries such as Anabelle Creation (2017), The Devil Made Me Do It (2022) and The Nun (2018). With the weight of the franchise behind it, The Nun II has successfully raced past several titles to become the most successful Hollywood horror film this year in India.

The Nun 2 cruises past Evil Dead Rise in India

As per Sacnilk, The Nun II has made Rs 32.99 crore in India so far. This comes right before the film finishes its 14th day at the box office. The Nun II crossed the lifetime gross of Evil Dead Rise in India, which amounts to Rs 31.28 crore. The Nun II had a slow start and it minted only Rs 2.35 crore on its first day.

Being a Thursday release, the film earned Rs 4.35 crore on Saturday (Day 3) and reached its peak point of Rs 4.7 crore on Sunday.

The Nun 2 enjoys box office success in the US 

The Nun 2 and A Haunting in Venice virtually tied for the number 1 spot in US and Canadian theaters over the weekend, with a slight edge carrying the horror sequel over the Hercule Poirot mystery, according to studio estimates Sunday. In its second weekend of release, Warner Bros. The Nun 2, a spinoff from the studio’s lucrative Conjuring franchise, grossed $14.7 million. 

If numbers hold, that will give The Nun 2 (up to $56.5 million total and $158.8 million worldwide) the top spot at the box office for the second straight week. Very close behind was A Haunting in Venice, Kenneth Branagh’s third Agatha Christie adaptation following 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express and 2022’s Death on the Nile. It opened with $14.5 million.
