Chinese social media platform Weibo has banned K-pop superstar Lisa, a member of the South Korean girl group Blackpink, along with Hong Kong actress Angelababy, sparking speculations among fans and the public. The bans have ignited discussions about potential censorship related to Lisa's burlesque performance in Paris.
Mysterious bans on Weibo
As per a report by Bloomberg News, Lisa vanished from Weibo and her personal page was replaced by an error message stating that her account was "not viewable due to being reported for violating laws (and) regulations." Angelababy, known as Angela Yeung, also received a ban for "violations of relevant laws and regulations." The bans were accompanied by little explanation from the platform.
Lisa's management agency, YG Entertainment, stated that they had no official statement regarding the situation, leaving fans and observers curious about the circumstances surrounding the bans.
Speculation around burlesque performance
Speculation about the censorship arose from reports in late September regarding Angelababy's attendance at a burlesque show by Lisa at the Parisian cabaret Crazy Horse. Lisa's performances at the venue, which took place on September 28, 29, and 30, were described as setting the stage alight and leaving an indelible impression. Lisa herself shared photos of her cabaret attire on her Instagram handle in October.

Chinese censorship and social values
As per reports, China is known for its swift censorship of content deemed politically sensitive or contrary to the socially conservative values upheld by the ruling Communist Party. In the past, celebrities have faced scrutiny for elements such as tattoos and what have been labeled "effeminate" fashion choices.
Meanwhile, some believe that Lisa's performance was a cultural difference that wasn't fully understood in China, while others supported the ban, finding her revealing outfits inappropriate.
