While crossing the mark of Rs 100 Crore is a big feat for any film, one rarely ever sees a small budget film get this appreciation at the box-office, especially if there is no big name involved with the movie. However, in recent times, a Malayalam film has managed to break the norm. Vishnu Sasi Shankar’s Malikappuram, which made its theatrical debut on December 20, 2022, has grossed around Rs 100 crore in the worldwide box office.
What is Malikappuram about?
Malikappuram's story revolves around Kallu, an 8-year-old devotee of Lord Ayyappan, and her desire to see the Sabarimala Temple. It depicts her journey as she and her cousin get past a number of obstacles to reach the well-known temple and get assistance from an unexpected stranger (Unni Mukundan).
The admission of women to the Sabarimala Temple has been the subject of much debate. The audience is moved by the emotions shown in the film as Unni's character acts as a guardian angel for the children. Malikappuram was marketed as an adventure drama with major roles played by Unni Mukundan, Deva Nandha, and Sreepath. Renji Panicker, Saiju Kurup, Sampath Ram, T. G. Ravi, Sreejith Ravi, Manoj K. Jayan, and Ramesh Pisharody were also in supporting roles.
The film's strong acting from the lead cast and its well-written screenplay captured the hearts of moviegoers. It ended up being Unni Mukundan's highest-grossing film to date, taking in almost Rs 100 crore at the global box office.
