In a new interview, the director reveals why he decided to change the ending of the movie while the entire plot line was based on the novel.
Sujoy Ghosh says he changed the film’s audience to suit the Indian audience
In an interview with PTI, filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh disclosed why he decided to change the ending of Jaane Jaan, despite it being based on the Japanese novel Devotion Of Suspect X. He said, “I thought its original ending may not be palatable for the Indian audience." He further stated that though the novel was a mystery thriller he wanted the film to be treated like a love story.
He added, “I interpreted it as the story of a man's unrequited love for a woman”. Sujoy reasoned that this was a factor in changing the climax of the film. In the movie, Kareena Kapoor confesses to murdering her abusive husband for which his neighbour, played by Jaideep Ahalwat in the film, took the fall. However, in the film, Jaideep’s character Naru willingly takes the blame on himself and goes to prison for his devotion and admiration of Kareena’s character.
Sujoy Ghosh says he wanted to adapt the Japanese novel for a long time
The crime thriller movie, based on the critically acclaimed Japanese novel Devotion of Suspect X from author Keigo Higashino, has been streaming platform since September 21. Ghosh, known for critical hits such as Jhankaar Beats, Kahaani and Badla, said he had been waiting to adapt Higashino’s novel, the love of his life, for a long time.
