It's Controversial/ Sultan of Delhi actress Mehreen Pirzada calls out netizens for 'trivialising marital rape'

Milan Luthria's gangster drama Sultan of Delhi, which premiered on the OTT platform on October 13, opened to mixed-to-positive reviews. One scene from the series, however, has grabbed the attention of viewers igniting a conversation about marital rape. Actress Mehreen Pirzada has now shared her displeasure on the same.

Sometimes, an actor has to go against one's morals, says Pirzada

Pirzada expressed her resentment about how her scenes around a grave subject like marital rape were reduced to and labelled as ‘sex scenes’ instead. The actress wrote on her X page, “It pains me to see that a serious issue like Marital Rape has been described by many in the media as a “Sex Scene.” This trivializes something that is a serious issue that many women the world over are currently dealing with.”

The actress added while calling out the men, “These people should understand that they have sisters and daughters too and I pray to god they never have to go through such trauma in their own lives as just the thought of such brutality and violence against women is repugnant.”

The actress also stated it’s her job as a professional actor to sometimes do certain scenes that are not palatable or go against one’s personal morals, if they are part of the story’s narrative or the script demands those actions.  The actress also took the opportunity to lead her team and especially director Milan Luthria for their sensitivity while handling these scenes. She added that they were “extremely professional in making sure that we as actors at no point were uncomfortable or exposed during the shooting of some very difficult scenes.”

Sultan of Delhi is Pirzada's OTT debut

Sultan of Delhi marks Mehreen Pirzada's OTT debut. Pirzada made her acting debut with the 2016 film Krishna Gaadi Veera Prema Gaadha, where she was paired opposite ‘Natural star’ Nani. In the coming years, Pirzada rose to fame with several popular Telugu films like F3, Ashwathama and Patthaas. The actress also played a small role in the 2017 film Phillauri.
