Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie’s Mr and Mrs Smith gets series adaptation starring Donald Glover

The renowned movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith will return as a TV series on Amazon Prime on February 2. Starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, the show is currently on schedule despite initial setbacks brought on by SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie played the lead characters in the original film. 

What is Mr. & Mrs. Smith about? 

In this adaptation of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, two lonely strangers get jobs for a shadowy spy organization that promises them a glamorous life filled with travel, wealth, and espionage, as well as a dream Manhattan brownstone. To achieve this, they have to live life as Mr. and Mrs. John Smith and Jane Smith are new identities in an arranged marriage. 

Now married, John and Jane face a new relationship milestone each week in addition to navigating a dangerous mission. When they start to feel genuine feelings for one another, their complicated cover story gets even more complicated.

Donald Glover on the distinction between film and series 

In November 2023, Donald clarified in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the distinction between their program and the original film benefits the audience. “It’s definitely going to be different for a lot of people, which I think is good. You can always go back and watch the old one, but this one gives you a different feeling. People are definitely going to be shocked. I just know how much people love the other one, so if everybody’s like, ‘Eh,’ we didn’t do a good job, I hope some people are like, ‘This is better than the original,’ and some people are like, ‘This is far worse.’” 

Glover and Francesca Sloane ("Fargo") share the role of executive producer and co-creator of the show. On February 2, 2024, all eight episodes of Mr. & Mrs. Smith will debut on Prime Video.
