Kaala Paani creator Sameer Saxena recently opened up about why he chose to cast Mona Singh in the show and also reflected on his very own 'Ned Stark' moment.

Sameer Saxena's Kaala Paani has gathered palpable interest since its October release on Netflix. The unique theme of the show, touted as India's first survival drama - particularly in the OTT space, has made it one of the foremost shows currently available for streaming in the country. Creator Sameer Saxena recently opened up about why he chose to cast Mona Singh in the show, also delving into the logic behind a shocking plot twist in the very first episode.

Sameer Saxena on why he cast Mona Singh


In an interview with Film Companion, Sameer Saxena opened up about why casting Mona Singh was a no-brainer for him. Referencing ther previous collaboration in show Yeh Meri Family, Saxena spoke about the good sync and understanding the duo share which has also translated into a personal equation.

He said, "Mona was an obvious choice. She's a friend and I've worked with her before. We did a show called Yeh Meri Family. So we have a very strong bond and we have a fantastic understanding. We really wanted her to do this role because we knew she fits the character perfectly."

Mona Singh is Kaala Paani's Ned Stark


When asked about if Mona Singh will be seen again in season 2, considering her character was killed off quite early, Saxena excitedly played on how Mona's Dr. Saudamini Singh was essentially the Ned Stark of Kaala Paani. He further shared how creating a shock effect, was the true essence of her character arc.

He said, "...That's the exact response we wanted...I'm so happy that you felt that way. Because that was the intention, that was the intention to cast Mona. That was the intention to create that part. Its our Ned Stark moment, that, you now, you create a hero..."
