Timeline for The Boys season 4 revealed
The eighth and final episode of Gen V season one, surprisingly had cameos by Antony Starr and Karl Urban who reprised their roles of Homelander and Butcher, respectively, from The Boys. In a recent interview with Variety, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke and Gen V co-showrunner Michele Fazekas, opened up on how the cameos essentially set the stage for the show's timeline - set a few days after the events in Gen V's finale.

Kripke said, "For Butcher, by the time they were making the finale, we were pretty deep into breaking Season 4. We knew that we wanted that virus to be a pretty big part of Season 4, and we knew that we wanted Butcher to be aware of it...This idea came up that it probably shouldn’t even happen in The Boys, it should happen in Gen V...It was really cool, because it does a nice little preamble to what’s coming next."
How were the cameos conceptualised?
The interview with the showrunners revealed that the core intention was not that there must be Homelander and Butcher cameo.

Introducing the virus outbreak as part of the Gen V finale was to serve a foreboding factor introducing the context of season four.
