Vijay Sethupathi starrer Maharaja has been enjoying its run at the box office ever since its release on June 14. The movie had a good start by opening up at ₹4.7 crore at the domestic box office. On the second day, the movie witnessed a 64.89 per cent growth and minted ₹7.75 crore with ₹5.85 crore in Tamil language and ₹1.9 crore in Telugu. In its opening weekend, the movie has crossed ₹20 crore mark.
Directed by Nithilan Saminathan, the action thriller drama witnessed growth on the third day of its release. On Sunday, the movie minted ₹9 crore, as per early estimates reported by Sacnilk. Adding the three-day collection, the movie earned ₹21.45 crore in its first weekend. Maharaja had an overall 46.54 per cent Tamil occupancy on Sunday with the maximum reported in two regions Trichy and Mumbai (70.50 per cent).
Produced by Sudhan Sundaram & Jagadish Palanisamy under Passion Studios, The Route and Think Studios, the movie also stars Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas and Natarajan Subramaniam, among others. The movie revolves around Vijay's character Maharaj, who is a barber by profession in K. K. Nagar. In the film, he tells the police that his "Lakshmi" is missing after a home robbery, leaving them confused about whether it is a person or an object.
As per a report by 123 Telugu, Netflix has secured the digital streaming rights for Maharaja. However, the makers are yet to confirm the news by announcing the premiere date.
