Malayalam filmmaker Alphonse Puthren, known for his works in films like Neram and Premam, stunned his fans and the film industry with a recent revelation about his health condition. On October 30, he took to social media to announce his exit from filmmaking due to Autism Spectrum Disorder, although he later deleted the post. The filmmaker's abrupt decision has left many in shock, and fellow director Sudha Kongara Prasad shared her heartfelt sentiments regarding his work.
Alphonse's sudden exit from films
In his now-deleted social media post, Alphonse Puthren disclosed his struggle with Autism Spectrum Disorder and expressed his intention to step away from cinema. He mentioned, "I'm stopping my cinema theatre career. I have Autism Spectrum Disorder, which I found out yesterday on my own. I don't want to be a burden to anyone else. I will continue doing songs and videos and short films and maximize on OTT. I don't want to quit cinema, but I have no other option."
Alphonse's unexpected revelation sent shockwaves through the film industry. Although he deleted the post, screenshots of his announcement quickly went viral, leading to widespread discussion and concern among his fans and colleagues.
Sudha Kongara Prasad's heartfelt farewell
On October 31, director Sudha Kongara Prasad, known for her work in films like Soorarai Pottru, took to her Instagram handle to share a poster of Alphonse's iconic film Premam. She expressed her deep appreciation for his cinema, saying, "Dear @puthrenalphonse, I’m going to miss your cinema. 'Premam' is my all-time favorite and kept me alive at my lowest. I would watch it on loop. It made me, a total cynic, fall in love again with the idea of being in love. Please continue to create in any form, and I will consume."

Alphonse Puthren's last directorial work was Gold, featuring popular actors Prithviraj and Nayanthara. The film received a lukewarm response from both critics and audiences. Before his surprising announcement, it was reported that Alphonse was working on a Tamil film titled Gift with actors Sandy and Kovai Sarala.
