The Television Academy announced nominations on Wednesday for the upcoming 76th edition of the Primetime Emmy Awards. The list of nominations includes historic choices and several critically acclaimed titles that had been overdue for recognition. Among all is Baby Reindeer actress Nava Mau, who has made history with her Emmy nominations as the first Latina trans nominee in the Supporting Actress category. In the hit Netflix series, Mau played the role of Teri opposite Richard Gadd’s Donny.
After learning that news, Mau admitted she was "speechless" and was crying for 45 minutes in joy. She said her Emmy nomination is a victory for the transgender acting community, as per Deadline.
For trans actors we just don’t get a lot of opportunities to develop: Nava Mau
In an interview with Deadline, Mau shared that her nomination is proof that trans actors can excel when given the right opportunities. “For trans actors, we just don’t get a lot of opportunities to develop our craft, grow as artists, and be recognised for all that we are and all that we can be,” she said. Opening up about her experience working in the show Baby Reindeer, she said that it was a "priceless" experience. Every step of the way, she could feel the way the experience was transforming for her. "To be recognised by my peers in the Academy is a celebration of that transformation," she added.
When asked if her success will pave the way for other trans actors, to this, she replied, “We can see that when trans people are given the opportunity, we will grow into it and so far beyond any expectation.”

For the unversed, Mau is not the first trans woman to be nominated at the Emmys. Earlier, Laverne Cox was recognised for her work in Orange Is the New Black in 2014.
Who is Nava Mau competing with?
Nava Mau has been nominated alongside Jessica Gunning, Dakota Fanning (Ripley), Lily Gladstone (Under the Bridge), Aja Naomi King (Lessons in Chemistry), Diane Lane (Feud: Capote vs. The Swans) and Kali Reis (True Detective: Night Country).
