Here's what the statement read: 

“I am deeply shocked and grieved to know about the death of Dr. M. Karunanidhi, President of DMK and Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
Dr. M. Karunanidhi who was fondly called Kalaignar was a versatile leader who held the masses mesmerized by his oratory. He was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for more than 18 years, during which period he authored and implemented a number of welfare schemes for the poor and underprivileged. The Maternity Assistance schemes the Marriage Assistance scheme the creation of the Slum Clearance Board, the provision of free electricity for the benefit of Farmers, the formation of many labour welfare boards, the nationalization of bus transport services were some of the most notable of them.
His contribution to the development of the Tamil Language both as a writer and administrator will always remain unforgettable.  His dialogues aimed at the promotion of social justice enlivened many a film and attracted the audience in large number to his brand of idealogy.  He was the author of several books including the famous commentary on the Thirukkural, the Kuraloviyam.
    He remained undefeated in all the elections he contested from 1957 to 2016 and was respected for his political acumen, and ability to strategise by political leaders from all parts of India. With a political span covering nearly seven decades he was familiar with all the Prime Ministers, Presidents and the Chief Ministers of various States and Heads of Political Parties. 
The nation joins the people of Tamil Nadu in this hour of grief.
I convey my deep condolences to the bereaved family members and pray that his soul may rest in peace."

Update at 7:40 PM: DMK working president MK Stalin requested party cadre to maintain law and order. In a statement, he said there is nobody to equal Karunanidhi in the Dravidian land. CM said, that, he was an undaunted political fighter, a mass leader who struggled for the socio-economic development of marginalized sections of society in Tamilnadu. In his death, India has lost a political stalwart and it will be difficult to fill the void caused by his sad demise. CM expressed his condolences to the bereaved members of the family.
The CM described M. Karunanidhi as one among the few people who made them politically aware.  CM will be participating in the last rites of Late Karunanidhi and will leave for Chennai on Wednesday.  The CM will personally pay tributes on behalf of Telangana People to Late Karunanidhi who is known as a great leader.

The statement read: 

"With deep anguish, we announce the demise of our beloved Kalaignar Dr. M Karunanidhi on 07.08.18 at 6:10 PM. Despite the best possible efforts by our team of doctors and nurses to resuscitate him, he failed to respond. 

We profoundly mourn the loss of one of the tallest leaders of India and we share the grief of the family members and fellow Tamilians worldwide."

Update at 5:15 PM: Police officials deployed outside the hospital can be seen trying to keep the crowd in control and away from the gates of the hospital. Supporter holding banners and crying over the ailing leader is seen having a scuffle with the police officials to get inside the hospital.

In the most recent medical bulletin released by the Kauvery Hospital regarding the health condition of DMK supremo M Karunanidhi, doctors have notified that the despite maximum medical support, his vital organ functions continue t deteriorate. 


The statement read: 
"There has been a significant decline in the clinical condition of Kalaignar Dr. M Karunanidhi over the last few hours. Despite maximum medical support, his vital organ functions continue to deteriorate.

His condition is extremely critical and unstable"


 Karunanidhi was admitted on July 28 with a drop in blood pressure. He was resuscitated and stabilised in the ICU and managed by a team of doctors and nurses. On 29/07/2018 there was a severe decline in his medical conditions due to difficulty in breathing. Post that, he responded well to medical management and his vital signs have gradually normalised.

On July 29, Karunanidhi was visited by Vice President Venkaiah Naidu. During his visit, Naidu inquired about Karunanidhi's health and had a talk with his family. All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) leader Derek O'Brien too visited the hospital and extended his wishes on behalf of the state of West Bengal: "I met Mr. Stalin. Doctors are doing their best. On behalf of Bengal, we wish him a speedy recovery." he said
Among the others who visited the hospital were senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, noted journalist and RSS ideologue S Gurumurthy, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit, DMK general secretary K Anbalagan, former telecom minister A. Raja and current Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami. 

On July 31, Tamil films superstar-turned-politician Rajnikanth visited M Karunanidhi in the evening.
