Himachal Pradesh records highest single-day spike of 180 COVID-19 cases; one death

Himachal Pradesh registered its highest single-day spike of 180 COVID-19 cases on Thursday, while a 70-year-old man died due to the disease, taking the death toll in the state to 18.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Himachal Pradesh stands at 3,817. So far, 2,435 people have recovered from the disease, leaving 1,328 active COVID-19 cases in the state, officials said.

Thirty-four patients have migrated out of the state, they said.

The fresh fatality was reported from Mandi district. The patient died at Shri Lal Bahadur Shashtri Government Medical College in Nerchowk, Senior Medical Superintendent Jeevanand Chauhan said.

He was admitted to a primary health centre in Bagsaid on Wednesday and was later shifted to the zonal hospital in Mandi and further to Nerchowk medical college, where he died at 12.30 am on Thursday, he added.

His sample was taken for testing, and the result came out as positive for COVID-19 after his death, Chauhan said.

The COVID-19 death toll has now risen to 18 in the state.

The deaths linked to COVID-19 in Himachal Pradesh include that of a 70-year-old woman from Delhi who had been staying at a guest house at Baddi in Solan district since March 15. She tested positive for the infection and died at PGIMER in Chandigarh on April 2.

The state health department initially showed her death in its record but it stopped doing so later, stating that as per the protocol, her death should be included in Chandigarh where she had tested positive.

On the contrary, Chandigarh authorities said her death should be included in the records of Himachal Pradesh from where she had been referred.

Of the fresh cases, the highest 69 cases were reported from Kullu, 19 from Hamirpur, 18 from Una, 14 from Mandi, 13 from Chamba, 10 each from Kinnaur and Solan, 9 each from Shimla and Sirmaur, 7 from Bilaspur and two from Kangra.  Solan has reported the highest number of active cases in the state at 376, followed by 156 in Chamba, 150 in Kullu, 131 in Sirmaur, 122 in Mandi, 105 in Una, 90 in Kangra, 76 in Hamirpur, 55 in Shimla, 52 in Bilaspur and 15 in Kinnaur.
