Shortly after he had conceded that it would be difficult for his party to win the 2019 General elections on its own, Congress leader Salman Khurshid has stated that his remarks on this matter were 'misinterpreted'.

When confronted by Republic TV following his statements regarding his party's chances in 2019 and the need of an alliance, the former MEA exclaimed that 'PM Modi was trying to get his comments misinterpreted' before adding that he will do his best to make the Mahagathbandhan work. Here's how the conversation panned out:

Nalini (Reporter): What is the intention behind the entire...(inaudible)

Salman Khurshid: It is to throw out Mr.Modi

Nalini (Reporter): And you said all the opposition parties need to come together and work together?

Salman Khurshid: I hope they do.

Nalini (Reporter): Why is there being opposition to your entire interview, why are parties misinterpreting it?

Salman Khurshid: Mr Modi is trying to get it misinterpreted. Don't take it's just against Mr.Modi, Mr.Modi, Mr.Modi.

Nalini (Reporter): What is the reference to the entire...

Salman Khurshid: No reference, no context, no reference at all.

Nalini (Reporter): Do you think a Mahagathbandhan would be possible?

Salman Khurshid: I'll certainly work for it.

Earlier, the senior Congress statesman had said that his party may not be able to win the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on its own, and that it may very well need an alliance to trump BJP.

"All our leaders have made it very clear that an alliance (is needed) to change the country's government. The BJP must go. Whatever it takes to sacrifice, adjust and negotiate to make the alliance a reality, Congress is willing to do," Khurshid told PTI.

Soon after, he took to Twitter to mention that his comments were taken in a wrong manner, even by the supporters of his own party. His message read, "Am deeply pained at reactions of some supposed Congress supporters to my statement on Grand alliance as need of hour. Can’t they read entire interview? Arrogance and ignorance make a toxic mix. Truth is an ally not enemy. Wake up friends."
