Prime Minister Narendra Modi calls Pak's PM-designate Imran Khan. Here's the statement

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday called Imran Khan, the apparent Prime Minister-designate of Pakistan, whose PTI party emerged the single-largest in the recently conducted Pakistan elections and is looking to form a government with the aid of other parties and independents.

Update at 10:39 pm: Imran Khan's PTI party has issued statements on the PM Modi-Imran Khan phone call, stating the following:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Imran Khan over his success in the General Elections and extended best wishes.

PM Modi said that India was ready for a new beginning of the relationship with Pakistan. Both countries should have a joint action plan to move ahead, said PM Modi, as per a tweet by the PTI

Imran Khan said that disputes should be resolved through dialogue. Through war and bloodshed, disputes are not resolved, but tragedy occurs, Imran Khan said.

Both countries should make joint efforts to fight poverty in both countries, added Imran Khan

Prime Minister speaks to Imran Khan, Chairperson of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party 

Prime Minister spoke to Mr Imran Khan, Chairperson of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party and congratulated him for his party emerging as the largest political party in the National Assembly of Pakistan in the recently conducted general elections. 

Prime Minister expressed hope that democracy will take deeper roots in Pakistan. 

Prime Minister also reiterated his vision of peace and development in the entire neighborhood.

In his celebratory news briefing after the Pakistan elections, Imran Khan had appealed for ties and talks with India.

As per sources, Imran Khan’s PTI is likely to invite SAARC nation leaders for the swearing-in ceremony. Top sources within the PTI party have said to Republic TV that a final call will be taken soon after members of National Assembly take oath. Imran Khan could invite PM Narendra Modi or EAM Sushma Swaraj. The guest list could also include Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar and a few top Indian industrialists. If invited, it will be an important reciprocation of PM Narendra Modi’s phone call on Monday evening. PM Modi during his 2014 oath-taking ceremony for PM’s office had invited all SAARC nation leaders including then Pak PM Nawaz Sharif.

On Saturday, India had issued its first statement in the aftermath of the Pakistan elections. The Ministry of External Affairs said:

“India desires a prosperous & progressive Pakistan at peace with its neighbours. We hope that the new Pakistan Govt will work constructively to build a safe, stable, secure & developed South Asia free of terror and violence”

The Imran Khan led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) emerged as the single largest party in the Pakistan elections by winning 115 out of 270 seats, falling 22 seats short of attaining a simple majority in the Pakistani Parliament. Meanwhile, former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's Pakistani Muslim League (Nawaz) (PML-N) trailed with 64 seats and rejected the election result alleging rigging.
