New Delhi: 500 live sniper rifle bullets were found during a routine traffic check in West Delhi's Moti Nagar area, officials revealed on Monday. The ammunition was being transported on a motorcycle, raising security concerns.
A routine traffic check in west Delhi's Moti Nagar area has led to the seizure of 500 sniper rifle bullets while being transported on a motorcycle, police said on Monday.
The traffic police were checking vehicles on Saturday night when they signalled a motorcycle rider to stop. Instead, the rider picked up speed and tried to flee, leading to a chase, said a senior police officer privy to the probe into the matter.
"While being chased, the man abandoned the motorcycle near a traffic stop and fled," the officer said.
Bullets Seized During Vehicle Search
Upon searching the motorcycle, police found a bag containing 10 boxes of live 7.62-caliber cartridges, typically used in AK-47s, light machine guns, and sniper rifles. The cartridges were seized and the Moti Nagar police station was notified.
An FIR under the Arms Act has been filed, and multiple teams are working to track down the suspect using CCTV footage and mapping the route taken by the fugitive.
“These bullets are highly dangerous, capable of causing maximum damage,” noted another officer. The police are confident the suspect will be caught soon, as the batch numbers on the bullets will assist in the investigation.
