Assam Hit by 4.2 Magnitude Earthquake; No Casualty Reported
The northeastern region of India is situated in a high seismic zone, making it susceptible to frequent earthquakes.
Guwahati: An earthquake of 4.2 magnitude jolted the north-central part of Assam on Sunday morning, an official bulletin said.
There are no immediate reports of injuries or property damage, officials confirmed.
According to a report from the National Center for Seismology, the quake struck at 7:47 am in Udalguri district, located on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra River, at a depth of 15 km. The epicentre of the earthquake was approximately 105 km north of Guwahati and 48 km west of Tezpur, near the Assam - Arunachal Pradesh border.
Residents in the neighboring districts of Darrang, Tamulpur, Sonitpur, Kamrup, and Biswanath also experienced the tremor. Additionally, areas in Kamrup Metropolitan, Morigaon, and Nagaon on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra felt the shaking.
The tremor was even felt in parts of western Arunachal Pradesh and eastern Bhutan, as indicated by the report.
The earthquake prompted people to rush out of their homes and gather in open areas.
