Aviation Minister Naidu Inspects Terminal-1 of Delhi Airport, Calls For Countrywide Audit

The minister said that the incident is being taken 'seriously', calling for a nationwide audit of airport buildings.

New Delhi: Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu on Friday, June 28, inspected the Terminal-1 of the Delhi airport where a portion of canopy collapsed amid heavy rainfall today, killing one person and injuring several others. Naidu has announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the deceased and Rs 3 lakh for ones injured in the incident. The minister said that the incident is being taken 'seriously', calling for a nationwide audit of airport buildings. 

Naidu, who visited the airport, said the situation is under control and Terminal 1 (T1) has been closed down and arrangements are being made to shift operations of flights to T2 and T3. “...A section of the canopy which is outside of the airport has collapsed due to heavy rains. We express our condolence to the life that has been lost in this tragic incident, four people have also been injured. So we are taking care of them right now. We immediately sent the emergency response team, the fire safety team and also the CISF, NDRF teams. Everyone was available at the site and they have done thorough inspection so that no other casualties are there,” Naidu said. 

So right now the situation is under control. The rest of the terminal building has been closed and everything is being thoroughly inspected so that there is no further untoward incident here..." added the union minister. 

Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu announcing that a thorough inspection of the structure at the airport will be carried out. He further called for a countrywide inspection of airport infrastructure. He said a thorough checking of all similar structures at airports across the country will be carried out.

6 Dead in Delhi Airport Mishap 

One person died and six were injured after a portion of the roof of the Delhi airport's Terminal-1 collapsed on cars, including taxis, amid heavy rain early Friday. Besides the roof sheet, the support beams collapsed, damaging the cars parked in the pick-up and drop area of the terminal. 

Flight operations have been suspended till 2pm at the terminal 1 of the Delhi Airport. The injured persons have been admitted to Medanta Hospital near the airport, and Naidu is expected to visit the victims later in the day.
