Earthquake of Magnitude 4.3 Hits Assam's Nagaon, Tremors Felt In Guwahati
Earthquake of magnitude 4.3 on the Richter scale hit Assam's Nagaon on Thursday, which led to a chaotic situation in the state.
On Thursday, Assam 's Nagaon was hit by an earthquake of magnitude 4.3 on the Richter scale, which led to a chaotic situation in the state. According to the sources, after the earthquake hit Nagaon in Assam , tremors were also felt across the state including Guwahati. Officials confirmed the earthquake saying that the earthquake occurred at 4.30 pm at a depth of 25 kilometres beneath the earth’s surface.
The National Center for Seismology (NCS), the nodal agency of the Government of India for monitoring earthquake activity in the country, stated that the epicentre of the quake was Nagaon in Assam . However, no casualty or damage to any property was reported due to the quake.
In a post on X, the NCS wrote, “EQ of M: 4.3, On: 26/09/2024 16:30:52 IST, Lat: 26.12 N, Long: 92.54 E, Depth: 25 Km, Location: Nagaon, Assam .”
Notably, the Northeastern states, including Assam , fall in the high seismic zone, with earthquakes frequently hitting the region. As per the seismic zoning map of the country, the total area is classified into four seismic zones. Zone V is seismically the most active region, while zone II is the least.
According to seismologists, Assam is in seismic zone V, which means it’s prone to earthquakes of moderate to very high intensity.
Approximately, 11 per cent of the area of the country falls in Zone V, 18 per cent in Zone IV, 30 per cent in zone III, and remaining in Zone II.
