Meerut: At least four people were killed and several others were injured in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut district, after a three-storey building suddenly collapsed on Saturday evening. The incident created a panic-like situation in the area leaving people shouting and crying. On information, the local police of Meerut along with the district administration rushed to the spot and initiated a rescue operation. According to the reports, the 3-storey building, located on street number 6 in Zakir Colony under the Lohia Nagar police station area, claimed to have collapsed due to incessant rain in Meerut and nearby districts for the last 3 days.

As per the police, the victims include an infant child. The teams of NDRF, SDRF, Firefighters and local administration along with the local police are carrying out rescue operations at the site to find any remaining survivors or recover more bodies from the debris.

Authorities suspect that around 8 people are still trapped under the debris. The rescue teams are trying to find the trapped people in the rubble. However, the rescue efforts are hampered by worsening weather, including light rain and darkness, and narrow streets preventing larger machinery from accessing the site.

According to the sources, the owner of the building has been identified as Nafo Alauddin, who used to run a dairy from the building.

Uttar Pradesh's Meerut Division Commissioner Selva Kumari J, SSP Vipin Tada, and SP City Ayush Vikram Singh have reached the spot following the incident and are supervising the rescue operation at the site.

Reports claimed that so far two individuals have been rescued, and the fire department teams are conducting rescue operations. However, the rescue efforts are being hampered by worsening weather, including light rain and darkness, along with narrow streets preventing larger machinery from accessing the site.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took stock of the rescue operation being carried out at the site and instructed the district officials to ensure prompt medical treatment for the injured. CM Yogi also wished for their swift recovery and directed officials to expedite relief efforts at the site.

Further details are being awaited regarding the incident.
