Kolkata: The West Bengal police have arrested Saddam Sardar, the main accused in a case of assault on a businessman, from Kultali in South 24 Parganas district in the state.

An alleged fake gold idol dealer, Saddam was accused of duping and looting people. This police action comes following complaints that Sardar had duped many people by selling them fake gold idols on social media and also taking money from people and not delivering them the items.

Police had on Monday conducted a raid on his house in Keurakhali village in Kultali area. Later, the cops uncovered a mysterious tunnel inside his house in the district. The illicit tunnel reportedly leads to Bangladesh. The tunnel is said to be 40-feet long which was built beneath his bedroom.

According to sources, the tunnel was uncovered when police went to raid the house following an assault complaint by the businessman. When police arrived at the house, the accused allegedly fired upon the cops, leading to the arrest of two women who were later produced before the court.

After reaching the accused's house, police had encountered the two women, who were said to be wives of accused brothers (Saddam and Sardul) who were later arrested. One more person, identified as Aftab, was also arrested.

It is said that the tunnel is linked to a nearby cannel which flows into Matla river in the Sunderbans beyond which lies the Indo-Bangladesh international border. On Wednesday, it was being speculated that Saddam fled to Bangladesh using the secret tunnel as an escape route.
