‘Hasina in Shock’: EAM S Jaishankar Briefs at All Party Meet on Bangladesh Unrest

New Delhi:  An all-party meeting called by the government concluded in the Parliament House on Tuesday morning after a massive unrest plunged Bangladesh due to Students protests on reservation leading to a situation of widespread anarchy all over the country.

The meeting was held at Parliament House and began at 10 am, as per the sources.  External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar briefed various party leaders on the developments in the neighboring country. 

Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, EAM Jaishankar, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju were present in the meeting meanwhile, from the opposition parties, leader of opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikaarjun Kharge also marked their presence in the meet. 

Rahul Gandhi questioned the External Affairs Minister (EAM) in the All Party meeting about Pakistan's involvement. In response, the EAM mentioned that a Pakistani diplomat had changed his profile picture to an insignia, indicating involvement.

'The government's current priority is to safeguard minorities in Bangladesh,' stated S Jaishankar at the meeting. 'Noting that it has been not even 24 hours since Hasina arrived in India, Jaishankar said she is in a state of shock and the government is giving her time to recover before it speaks to her over various issues, including her future plans, the sources said.

'Briefed an All-Party meeting in Parliament today about the ongoing developments in Bangladesh. Appreciate the unanimous support and understanding that was extended.', Posted Dr Jaishankar on social media platform on X.

Bangladesh's Embattled Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country on Monday after month-long students protest over reservations in government jobs leading to a situation of anarchy and unrest. Hasina landed at Hindon Airbase on the outskirts of Delhi and may seek asylum in the United Kingdom.  

Meanwhile, Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin announced the dissolution of the Parliament which was formed after elections in January 2024. Ex- PM and political rival of Sheikh Hasina, Khaleda Zia was also freed from jail following massive protests and unrests across Bangladesh
 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security on the issue on Monday.
