Chennai: Due to heavy rainfall predictions, schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts of Tamil Nadu have been ordered to remain closed on Tuesday. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has also urged Information Technology (IT) companies in these districts to allow their employees to work from home from October 15 to 18.

Chennai Rains

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal regions for the next three days.

CM Stalin Reviews Preparedness

On Monday, Stalin chaired a meeting to assess the state's monsoon preparedness. The Chennai Corporation Commissioner reported that 990 pumps, 57 tractor-mounted pump sets, 36 motorboats, and ample supplies of disinfectant and cleaning materials were ready. District collectors from Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kanchipuram also outlined their precautionary measures.

Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam, and Director-General of Police Shankar Jiwal were present at the meeting.

IMD Issues Orange Alert

The IMD has issued an orange alert for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal regions from October 14 to 16. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected during this period, with the most intense downpours likely on October 14 and 15. A low-pressure area is developing over the southeast Bay of Bengal and is expected to move northwestwards towards north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
