According to media reports, the violence began during Durga idol immersion on Monday night, when Sahu poured hot oil on a constable, causing him severe burns. After this, Sheikh attempted to catch Kuldeep, but he managed to escape and later targeted Sheikh's family in his absence killing them with a sharp weapon.
Following these two tragic incidents, angry residents agitated by the murders and the escape of Sahu, hit the streets, urging for a city-wide bandh and torched vehicles parked outside Kuldeep Sahu's house and warehouse. The massive violence erupted across the district and the town was shut down after a strike, as per media reports.

The mob also attacked SDM Jagannath Verma when he attempted to intervene, but the police managed to rescue him, IANS reported.
A heavy police presence was deployed at the scene to control the situation.
The brutal killings and subsequent violence have drawn sharp political reactions.
Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel expressed his outrage over the incident. He said the rule of law no longer exists in the state, which was once called an island of peace.
However, Deputy Chief Minister Arun Saw lashed out at Congress , accusing them of contributing to the state's lawlessness.
"The Congress party need not worry about the law-and-order situation. The state government is taking strict action, and wherever negligence by officials is found, they are being held accountable," he said.
