Gurugram: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday acquitted Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim in the murder case of his former manager Ranjit Singh. The Sirsa-headquartered sect chief, who is also serving a 20-year jail term for raping two of his disciples, is currently lodged in Sunaria jail in Rohtak.
Jatinder Khurana, lawyer of Gurmeet Ram Rahim, said, “The Honorable Punjab and Haryana High Court has changed the order of the lower court and all five people who were involved in this have been acquitted. We welcome this decision.”
Former Dera manager Ranjit Singh was murdered on July 10, 2002, at his native village, Khanpur Kolian in Kurukshetra. According to the CBI chargesheet, he left on his motorcycle after serving tea to his father, who was working in the fields. On the way, four people fired gun shots at him and fled. Ranjit later died of bullet injuries.
He was murdered for his suspected role in the circulation of an anonymous letter, which narrated how women were being sexually exploited by the sect head at the Dera headquarters.
After a thorough investigation, CBI filed a charge sheet in 2007 against six accused and charges were framed in 2008 while, on October 8, 2021, the court convicted Rahim and four others in connection with former Dera manager Ranjit Singh's murder case.
This is a developing story..
