DRI seizes 33.92 lakh smuggled cigarettes valued at ₹5.7 crore hidden in tamarind boxes

Mumbai: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in Mumbai recently intercepted a 40-feet refrigerated container at Jawaharlal Nehru Port, seizing smuggled goods worth approximately 5.7 crore rupees, as per an official statement.
Acting on intelligence, officials inspected the container at Nhava Sheva's Container Freight Station and discovered a cleverly concealed stash. The container, declared to contain tamarind, had cigarette cartons concealed within cardboard boxes. These cartons were discreetly packed amidst the tamarind, making them nearly undetectable upon initial inspection.
Upon thorough examination, authorities uncovered a staggering 33,92,000 cigarette sticks within the hidden compartments, valued at the mentioned sum. According to DRI, Investigations into this smuggling operation are currently underway.
