Driving through fog? Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind

New Delhi: As the cold wave continues its grip over northern India, commuters have been facing difficulty in travel. The national capital on Wednesday witnessed one of the season's worst dense fog. Hundreds of flights were delayed and many were diverted. Furthermore, the foggy condition also led to trains being cancelled.

On Thursday, 134 flights and 22 trains are currently running late, news agency ANI posted on X.

Similar foggy situations occurred in Punjab, Haryana and other states leading to multiple vehicle collisions across the country.

In Greater Noida, several vehicles collided on the Yamuna Expressway. Similarly, a  tragic collision occurred on the Agra highway.

Though this sounds scary and way too risky there are a few steps by which you can skip such situations. Take a look!

• Slow down and don't hurry to reach your destination. 
• Turn on your low-beam headlights or parking lights also called fog lights to let people ahead of you and behind spot your vehicle. 
• Never use your high-beam lights as it causes glare, making it more difficult for you to see what’s ahead of you on the road.
• Maintain distance between you and the vehicle in front of you to account for sudden stops or changes in traffic. 
• Always stay in your lane, to do so follow the lines on the road with your eyes.
• In case of very dense fog where visibility is near zero, the best course of action is to first turn on your hazard lights and simply pull into a safe location such as the parking lot nearby.
• However, if there is no parking lot or driveway to pull into, park your vehicle off to the side of the road as far as possible, turn off all lights except your hazard flashing lights and set the emergency brake, so that other drivers don't mistakenly run into you.
