From Jamshedji to Maya Tata: The Family Tree of India's Business Conglomerate Ratan Tata
Ratan Tata died at age of 86. Here's a look at the family lineage of the Tatas.
Mumbai: Ratan Tata, the former chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, died on Wednesday night at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai after being admitted for age-related health issues.
A pivotal figure in India's corporate landscape, Tata guided the Tata Group through the nation’s economic liberalization and its subsequent global expansion. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan and was renowned as one of India’s greatest philanthropists, positively impacting millions through initiatives in healthcare, education, drinking water, and other vital areas.
Here’s Family Tree of Ratan Tata
Jamsetji Tata, the founder of the Tata Group, was born to Nusserwanji Ratan Tata and Jeevanbai Kavasji Tata in 1939. In addition to Jamsetji, Nusserwanji had four other children: Ratanbai, Maneckbai, Virbaiji, and Jerbai.
Born into a family of Parsi priests, Jamsetji broke tradition by launching his own trading firm in 1868 at the age of 29. He established a textile mill in central India in the 1870s, and his vision laid the groundwork for technical education in the country, helping India to emerge as an industrialized nation.
Dorabji, Jamsetji’s elder son, played a crucial role in realizing his father's vision, establishing the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and continuing the Tata legacy of philanthropy. Jamsetji’s younger son, Ratan, was also a noted philanthropist who founded a trust to support educational development and other public welfare initiatives.
Sir Ratan Tata married Navjbai Sett and adopted Naval H. Tata, who married Sonoo Commisariat. They had two sons, Ratan N. Tata and Jimmy N. Tata, but Naval and Soonoo divorced when Ratan was just 10. Naval later married Simone Dunoyer and had a son, Noel Tata, making him Ratan and Jimmy’s half-brother.
Ratan and Jimmy never married, while Noel married Aloo Mistry, the sister of the late Cyrus Mistry, who once chaired the Tata Group. Together, Noel and Aloo have three children: Leah Tata, Maya Tata, and Neville Tata.
Neville is married to Manasi Kirloskar, and they have two children: Jamset Tata and Tiana Tata.
Additionally, Jeevanbai Kavasji Tata’s brother, Dadabhai Kavasji Tata (the adopted son of Kavasji Maneckji Tata), had a son with his wife Bhikhibai. Dadabhai’s son, Ratanji Dadabhai Tata, married a French woman named Suzanne Briere, and they had five children: Syla Petit, Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhai Tata, Rodabeh Tata, Darab Tata, and Jimmy Tata.
