New Delhi: India on Sunday logged 841 fresh Covid-19 infections, recording the highest single-day noble virus cases in seven months. According to the health ministry’s daily bulletin, the active tally has gone up to 4,309 cases. Earlier, it was on May 19, 2023, that India recorded 865 Covid cases in a single day.

In addition to it, three deaths have also been reported from Kerala, Karnataka and Bihar each, in the last 24 hours, as per data shared by the health ministry.

On Saturday, Kerala had reported 41 JN.1 sub-variant cases in a single day, which was highest from the state. However, the majority of patients were reportedly kept on home-isolation. The first case of the JN.1 variant of Covid-19 was also reported in Kerala.

Ahead of the New Year, both the central and state governments are keeping a close watch on the new Omicron sub-variant JN.1. This is a Variant of Interest (VOI) which is under intense scientific scrutiny. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), more than 7,000 cases of Covid-19 JN.1 sub-variant have been reported from 41 countries.

Considering the sudden surge in the positive cases, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi has issued guidelines for Covid-19 new sub-variant cases. The JN.1 sub-variant is a descendant of the Omicron subvariant known as BA.2.86 or Pirola. As per health ministry, a total of 109 cases of the JN.1 sub-variant have been detected in India until Wednesday.

India these days is grappling with the chilling weather conditions, and with dipping temperature and emergence of a new sub-variant, the number of daily pandemic infections has been on the rise. Before December 5, the number of daily cases had dropped to double-digits, according to the data.

During the peak of the pandemic, the daily number cases were reported in lakhs. Ever since the outbreak of the pandemic in early 2020, more than 4.5 crore people have got infected leading to the death of over 5.3 lakh people in about four years.

According to the ministry, around 220.67 crore doses of Covid vaccines have been administered in the country so far.
