Bengaluru: In a unique partnership, the Bangalore Apartments Federation (BAF), representing nearly 1,300 apartment and villa resident welfare associations, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) to provide real-time traffic alerts to apartment residents. The initiative is expected to benefit around 15 lakh citizens residing or working in apartments across Bengaluru, allowing them to plan their commutes more efficiently.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), M N Anucheth, said, “Under this MoU, BTP will share real-time traffic updates and alerts with BAF, allowing apartment residents to plan their commutes more efficiently. Our teams will also attend BAF cluster meetings to offer training and awareness on road safety and traffic rules. We will provide hyperlocal updates and traffic alerts within a 5-km radius (of apartments).”

According to an official statement from BAF, the goal of the partnership is to promote effective time management, awareness, and public collaboration. “Live alerts of congestion across the city will be notified via the BAF Connect Member mobile app, its website, and WhatsApp channels,” the release said.

BAF President, Vikram Rai, highlighted the potential for residents to actively contribute to the system: “We hope that soon we can also enable residents and other citizens to contribute information and alerts back to the system, making it really dynamic and community-centric.”

BAF will work with BTP to design traffic awareness and training programs for children and youth living in apartments, focusing on road safety, traffic rules, and civic engagement.

With Bengaluru's traffic congestion worsening each day, BTP has been crowdsourcing data from platforms like Google Maps, MapMyIndia, and travel data aggregators such as Ola, Rapido, and Namma Yatri. The data has been instrumental in monitoring traffic congestion, providing route recommendations, and predicting future conditions. Now, BTP aims to improve its data collection by involving apartment residents across the city through the partnership with BAF.
