Patna: The Bihar cabinet led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar took a significant step towards boosting urban transport by giving a nod to new metro projects in four more cities.
Apart from Patna Metro, the foundation of which was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019, the four additional cities that will have metro connectivity are Muzaffarpur, Gaya, Darbhanga, and Bhagalpur.
The Patna Metro routes are currently under construction, divided into two lines- (East-West Line): Danapur Cantonment to Khemni Chak and (North-South Line): Patna Junction Railway Station to New ISBT.
Giving an additional push to Bihar's urban transport system, the Kumar-led cabinet gave the nod to the construction of metro projects in another four cities, ensuring enhanced connectivity and cutting commuter travel time.
“The state cabinet approved the Urban Development and Housing Department’s proposal about metro rail projects in Muzaffarpur, Gaya, Darbhanga and Bhagalpur. Now, the feasibility reports will be prepared after which the detailed project reports (DPR) will be finalised,” said S Siddharth, Additional Chief Secretary.
While the government has finalised the introduction of new metro projects, the routes are yet to be disclosed officially. It's likely to be made public after the issue of a feasibility report.
In the first phase of Patna Metro, five stations will be made operational by March 2025, said officials adding that it will have 15.36 km of elevated track and 16.30 km of underground track.
In Muzaffarpur, the metro route will certainly be determined as per the ‘Greater Muzaffarpur’ city planning module, which covers several parts of the city including Subhankarpur of Madwan zone, Dadar Kolhua of Kanti zone, Sahabajpur of Prophetpur Mushari zone, Sheikhpur, Bada Jagannath, Sherpur, Susta, Rohua, Kanhauli, Bhagwanpur and Majhauli.
The metro train in Darbhanga is expected to run through Darbhanga Port, west part of Darbhanga station via Mirzapur, DMCH Laheriasarai, till the last part of the city, Ekmighat. The hope to run the metro up till Ekmighat was expressed as the proposed Darbhanga AIIMS is coming up in the Shobhan Bypass area of the region.
In Bhagalpur and Gaya, the metro lines are expected to cover the entire city, given the urban development planning which sleeves both the cities completely.
