Mumbai: The Railway Board in Delhi has approved an immediate revision of porter charges at Central Railway (CR) stations in Mumbai. Porters at major stations will now receive Rs 85 per trip for handling up to 40 kilograms of luggage, a significant increase from the previous Rs 40. At smaller stations, the new rate is set at Rs 75 per trip, with the aim of standardising porterage fees across the network.

This change aims to standardise porterage fees across the network, which includes significant stations like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Dadar Terminus, Thane, Kalyan, and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT).

Despite the increased rates, porters have expressed dissatisfaction. A porter at Dadar Terminus, pointed out that the association of porters was not consulted about the revision. He also raised concerns over a declining demand for their services, driven by the increased availability of lifts, escalators, and the widespread use of wheeled luggage by passengers.

Revised Rates of Porters At Railway Stations

  • Large Stations: Rs 85 per trip for luggage up to 40 kg
  • Medium Stations: Rs 80 per trip for luggage up to 40 kg
  • Small Stations: Rs 75 per trip for luggage up to 40 kg

Waiting Charges

  • Large Stations: Rs 85 for every additional half-hour after the first 30 minutes
  • Medium Stations: Rs 80 for every additional half-hour after the first 30 minutes

Additional Services

  • Assistance for Sick or Disabled Passengers: Rs 135 with two attendants, Rs 205 with four attendants

Licensed porters, identifiable by their red uniforms and arm badges, are stationed at all major CR stations. Passengers are advised to pay only the official charges displayed prominently at the stations.
