Independence Day 2024: India is set to celebrate its 78th Independence Day on August 15, 2024, marking the end of nearly two centuries of British colonial rule. The day commemorates the nation’s historic achievement of independence on August 15, 1947.
Theme: ‘Viksit Bharat’
This year’s Independence Day theme, ‘Viksit Bharat,’ symbolizes India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047, the centenary of its independence. The theme underscores the government’s commitment to transforming India into a leading global economy and a developed society over the next two decades.
Historical Context
India's journey to independence began with the ‘Revolt of 1857’ and gained momentum under Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership in the early 20th century. The Indian Independence Bill was introduced in the British House of Commons on July 4, 1947, leading to the formal declaration of independence on August 15. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India, famously described this achievement as a ‘Tryst with Destiny.’
Significance of the Day
Independence Day is marked by the Prime Minister’s flag-hoisting ceremony and national address, reflecting on the country’s progress, achievements, and future aspirations. This year’s speech will be the 11th consecutive Independence Day address by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the first of his third term. The address will be broadcast live on Doordarshan at 7:30 am and streamed on the Press Information Bureau's YouTube channel, as well as on social media platforms including X (formerly Twitter) via @PIB_India and the PMO Twitter handle.
