"Supreme Court today i.e. 22.8.2024 (Thursday) at 10.30 am, it was brought to the attention that justice will happen in a fast-track manner and also every step will be taken towards the prevention of violence against healthcare workers nationwide including at the Institute level. The Supreme Court has addressed the concern of the safety of healthcare workers, especially women doctors at a national level and has constituted a National Task Force. In view of the above developments in a positive direction, we held a GBM and have decided to suspend our strike till further notice," the RDA said in a press note.

The protests by resident doctors at government hospitals in several states across the country ended on Thursday as major doctors' bodies called off their 11-day strike over the rape-murder of a trainee medic in Kolkata after the Supreme Court made an appeal to them to resume work.

Agitating junior doctors at state-run hospitals in West Bengal on Thursday said they will continue their ceasework to protest against the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital earlier this month.

The Jaipur resident doctors have decided to call off the ongoing strike in support of the agitation against rape and murder of a Kolkata doctor. Dr Manohar Siyol, president of Jaipur Association of Resident Doctors (JARD), said a meeting held on Thursday evening decided to call off the strike following the Supreme Court's appeal during the hearing in the case.

Hours after meeting the parents of the woman doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered, West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose sent a confidential letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee but it was not received by the CMO, an official in the Raj Bhavan claimed on Thursday.

The Supreme Court on Thursday termed “extremely disturbing” the Kolkata Police’s delay in registering the unnatural death of the woman doctor who was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. It also asked protesting doctors to resume work and assured them that no adverse action would be taken after they rejoin.

CBI got Court's permission to conduct a polygraph test on former Principal Dr Sandip Ghosh and four doctors in Kolkata rape-murder case, sources were quoted as saying. 

West Bengal Director of Medical Education Dr Kaustav Nayek said," “The new principal has joined...It (deployment of CISF) depends on the situation. They will leave one the situation is fine...Everything will be fine. Let the principal settle down, a plan will then be formed. I will speak after that...The entire faculty met the principal. A few students came to us, we spoke with them. The students will speak with the principal tomorrow.”

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday approached Kolkata High Court for permission to conduct a polygraph test on RG Kar Medical College and Hospital's ex-principal, Dr Sandip Ghosh, and four doctors after finding discrepancies in their statements during the investigation.

“Daily meetings are being held with Resident doctors and the Students' Union. A 4-member committee has been formed to address their safety concerns under the chairmanship of Dean Academics and a 15-member has also been formed which will conduct an internal collaborative security audit,” said Dr Rima Dada, AIIMS New Delhi Spokesperson. 

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is examining four doctors who were present on the night of the crime when a woman doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar medical college in Kolkata. CBI wants to conduct a polygraph test of Sandip Ghosh and four other doctors. 

“This is a unique incident and it proves that there is a total failure of law and order in the state of West Bengal. The CM, who is also the Home Minister and as well as the health minister of the state, should resign from her post,” Majumdar said. 

"We, the Bengal BJP are protesting demanding justice for the victim and resignation of CM Mamata Banerjee. BJP is fighting, justice should be done and the CM should resign immediately..." he said. 

During BJP's protest march to Swasthya Bhavan against Kolkata woman doctor rape-murder, BJP leader Agnimitra Paul said"...Our only demand is the resignation of Mamata Banerjee."

“The Bengal and the entire country is on the road due to the incident that has happened. The country is ashamed of the way the CM is trying to protect the accused,” BJP leader said.

The CJI said, “Justice and medicine cannot go on strike. Can we go and sit outside the Supreme Court now?”

• CJI: "In view of the fact that this court has taken steps for institutionalization of safety for medical professionals, it is expected that doctors return to their duties."
• CJI: "Pending the report of the National Task Force (NTF), all states shall ensure that they remain alert to any apprehensions of violations or breaches of safety."
• CJI: "All states and UTs shall ensure that they can prevent any apprehension of violence at medical establishments."

• CJI: "An apprehension is expressed on behalf of doctors stating that they are likely to be targeted. Some are already proceeded against for the protest. We expect compliance with the Court’s direction that doctors will join their duties. If any actions have been taken against doctors protesting, we direct that no coercive steps be taken against them. Get back to work now."
• CJI: "So far as the community of doctors is concerned, they have to return back to work."

This court has not injuncted the state from exercising the lawful powers entrusted by law, but we reaffirm that peaceful protests shall not be disturbed or disrupted, and the state shall not take any action against those peacefully protesting against the RG Kar incident."

CJI: "Counsels' suggestions on (1) distress call systems; (2) institutional FIRs; (3) compensation distress funds—these may be considered by the National Task Force (NTF)."

CJI: "A number of counsels took part on behalf of doctors and other stakeholders. Earlier, while forming the National Task Force, it was decided that the NTF should consult all stakeholders. We hope and trust that all stakeholders likely to be affected will be heard, including those responsible for maintaining safe workplaces for medical professionals. The counsels have placed some additional suggestions such as institutionalizing a distress call system, registering institutional FIRs, and constituting a compensation distress fund. Let the NTF consider all of this."

CJI: "Undoubtedly, the suggestions of the representatives should be taken by the NTF. We direct that a portal be opened on the Ministry's website for submitting suggestions to the NTF."

• CJI: "What is the reason for (a) the FIR being lodged 14 hours late; (b) the principal of the college should have come straight to the college to file the FIR—whom is he protecting? (c) He resigned and was assigned to another college?"
• CJI: "But this does not justify the registration of the FIR at 11:30 PM when the body was recovered much earlier."

• CJI: "What is the reason why the FIR was registered after a 14-hour delay?"

• CJI: "The principal should have directly registered an FIR. The moment he tendered his resignation, he was appointed as the principal of another college."
• Kapil Sibal: "Yes, we will say all of that. Now we all have Swiss bank accounts also, as per social media."

• CJI: "Let the investigation go on by CBI into the death and let Kolkata Police probe the vandalism. We never said that normal law procedure will not be followed. Only that do not arrest for merely protesting."

• CJI: "We have received status reports from the CBI and Kolkata Police. Kolkata Police is probing vandalism at the hostel after the protest at the site. It appears from the record that a request for conducting a polygraph test has been submitted for the accused to the ACJM Sealdah and it is under process. The ACJM Sealdah shall pass orders on this application no later than 5 PM on August 23, 2024."

The Bombay High Court on Thursday called the sexual assault on two minor girls at their school in Badlapur “absolutely shocking” and said that there cannot be any compromise on the safety and security of girls.

The hearing on Kolkata doctor's rape and murder case is set to resume at 2 pm.

• CJI: "The dead body of victim, the board verbally opined that death was due to strangulation, possibility of sexual assault, this is possibility."
