India Must Reconsider Its Policy Towards Bangladesh: Top BNP Leader | EXCLUSIVE
Abdul Moyeen Khan emphasized that the original motive behind the creation of Bangladesh was to establish a democracy.
Abdul Moyeen Khan, a senior leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), addressed allegations of foreign interference in Bangladesh's recent political turmoil in an exclusive interview with Republic Media Network. The conversation comes in the wake of Sheikh Hasina's ouster from power and amidst ongoing speculation about external influences.
Khan expressed astonishment at claims suggesting Western intervention in Bangladesh’s affairs, particularly from the United States. He criticized the notion, stating, "I am amazed how India, being run by the most capable people around the world, can continue to lead in a world of imagination. The idea that there has been U.S. intervention in Bangladesh is sheer fiction, especially given the autocratic destruction wrought by Sheikh Hasina's government."
The BNP leader also rebutted accusations regarding the role of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan. He highlighted the severe impact of Hasina's regime, alleging that her administration was responsible for the deaths of over 1,000 innocent people, including children, before she fled the country.
Regarding the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, Khan acknowledged that Yunus had previously indicated his willingness to engage in regime change. He noted, “Bangladesh’s foreign policy has always been friendly towards every nation. Historically, the U.S. has been a significant development partner since 1971, and India’s support has also been crucial. However, India must reassess its stance towards Bangladesh not based on past events but on the current political context of 2024.”
Khan emphasized that the original motive behind the creation of Bangladesh was to establish a democracy, which he believes Hasina’s government had undermined by shifting towards autocracy. He urged for a revised understanding of Bangladesh’s political dynamics from international stakeholders.
