Commuters struggles with monsoon fury in Delhi
Uday Bhaskar, a commuter who missed his flight after getting stuck in a traffic jam expressed disappointment over the government's unpreparedness as heavy rain in Delhi early Friday brought the national capital to a standstill.
Monsoon arrived in Delhi with a fury in the early hours of Friday as heavy rains, the highest in a single day of June in 88 years, lashed the city leaving streets flooded, traffic caught in chaos and flight operations suspended at Delhi airport's Terminal-1 due to a canopy collapse.
"On the very first day of monsoon, a flood-like situation emerged. I wonder how they are going to manage the situation going ahead. We are utterly disappointed by the government's mismanagement," Bhaskar said.
Rows of irked passengers were seen at the airport as flights routed to different destinations were cancelled due to the downpour.

Two boys drown in rainwater-filled ditch in northeast Delhi
Two boys aged eight and 10 years drowned while they were playing in a rainwater-filled ditch in northeast Delhi on Friday evening, police said.
According to police, the incident took place in a five-foot-deep ditch near Pusta Number Five in the New Usmanpur area which got filled with water due to heavy rainfall.
The boys went to play in the ditch and drowned as they went into the deep waters, police said.
Upon receiving information, the police reached the spot and rescued the boys. They rushed them to a hospital where they were declared dead on arrival, they said.
The bodies were sent for post-mortem and further investigation is underway, they added.

IGI roof collapse: Delhi Police files FIR, begins probe to fix responsibility
The Delhi Police Friday filed an FIR under sections related to death by negligence after the collapse of the roof of Delhi airport's Terminal-1 killed one person and injured six others.
Officials said the Delhi Police has started the probe and will fix responsibility.
The city witnessed heavy rains from around 3 am. At the airport's busy Terminal 1, the rain destruction took a tragic turn. Around 5 am, the massive canopy covering the departure area gave way, trapping several people. Besides the roof sheet, support beams collapsed, pinning down parked cars.
A taxi driver, identified as Ramesh Kumar, was rescued from a car on which an iron beam had fallen but was declared dead when he was taken to the Medanta Hospital facility near the terminal. The injured were admitted to the hospital.

Two-day meet of 10 autonomous councils of Assam begins
A two-day conference of Assam's autonomous councils, which are not covered under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, began here on Friday, an official statement said.
Leaders of Rabha-Hasong, Mising, Tiwa, Deuri, Thengal-Kachari, Sonowal-Kachari, Bodo-Kachari, Moran and Mottock communities and the Kamatapur area are participating in the meet.
Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, speaking at the inaugural session, said the meeting was organised with the view to empower the councils and ensure their smooth functioning.
Also, discussions on framing rules for working of these councils within the legal framework will be held, he said.

Heavy rains pound Delhi as monsoon arrives; airport canopy collapse, waterlogging, traffic snarls add to chaos
Monsoon arrived in Delhi with a fury in the early hours of Friday as heavy rains, the highest in a single day of June in 88 years, brought the national capital to a standstill leaving streets flooded, traffic caught in chaos and flight operations suspended at Delhi airport's Terminal-1 due to a canopy collapse.
A cab driver died and six people were injured after a portion of the canopy collapsed on cars following the rains.
A 39-year-old man was electrocuted in Rohini's Prem Nagar area after he came in contact with a live wire. Three labourers are feared trapped after an under-construction wall collapsed in southwest Delhi's Vasant Vihar area.
Key tunnels like the one at Pragati Maidan were closed and reports of homes being flooded came in from across the city, including the upscale areas of Lutyens' Delhi. Bungalows of Delhi Water Minister Atishi and several MPs, including Congress's Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari and Samjawadi Party's Ramgopal Yadav, were flooded.

NIA searches multiple places in Naxal-affected Chhattisgarh
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) Friday conducted a series of searches in the Naxal-infested regions of Chhattisgarh in connection with a CPI (Maoist) arrest and arms recovery case.
"Half a dozen places in the troubled region were extensively searched, and several mobile phones, a printer, and cash amounting to Rs 39,100 were seized along with incriminating documents," a statement issued by the NIA said.
The six premises subjected to searches are located in the remote villages of Mujalgondi, Kalmuchche, Amabeda and Jiwalamari in Kanker district, it said.
The NIA is continuing with its investigation in the case, registered initially by the local police on February 5 this year and taken over by NIA on February 22.

Delhi govt to set up control room to monitor city's waterlogging situation after heavy rain
The Delhi government will set up a 24-hour control room to monitor the waterlogging situation in the national capital, Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj announced on Friday after the city was lashed by heavy rains, the highest in a single day of June in 88 years.
Bharadwaj and his ministerial colleagues Atishi, Gopal Rai and Imran Hussain held an emergency meeting in the afternoon to take stock of the situation after a downpour in the early morning left Delhi waterlogged and brought traffic to a standstill in many areas.
A portion of the roof of the Delhi airport's Terminal-1 collapsed due to the rain, leaving one person dead and six injured.
"Delhi recorded 228 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours which was the highest since 1936. It led to waterlogging," Atishi told a press conference.

Power cuts in several parts of Delhi after heavy rainfall
Several parts of Delhi experienced long power cuts on Friday due to technical faults and precautionary shutdowns implemented to prevent electrocution in waterlogged areas following heavy rainfall.
Residents of Dwarka, Jangpura and Laxmi Nagar said the power supply was disrupted as soon as it started raining in their areas.
"The power supply was cut around 3-4 am amid heavy rains and was restored hours later at 4 pm," a Jangpura resident Pranav Mishra said.
Many areas, including Nizamuddin, Jangpura, Sector 7 in Dwarka, parts of Pitampura, Rohini, Model Town, Mukherjee Nagar, Timarpur, parts of Hauz Khas, Green Park, Mayapuri, Sangam Vihar, Paharganj, Sadar Bazar, Ram Nagar, Bara Hindu Rao, Karawal Nagar, Sonia Vihar, Seelampur, Laxmi Nagar, and Trilok Puri, faced power outages of varying durations.

Delhi court sentences 5 men to life imprisonment in 2011 dacoity, murder case
A court here has sentenced five men to life imprisonment in a 2011 case of dacoity and murder.
Additional Sessions Judge Manisha Khurana Kakkar was hearing the case against the five convicts Jitender Badhana, Ravi, Mohammed Ifrahim, Yusuf and Bobby.
The case was also registered against Vikas alias Boga but he died during the trial and proceedings against him were abated in January 2023.
Public prosecutor Paryag Dutt Pandey appeared for the state.
In December 2023, the court had convicted the five accused for the offences of dacoity and murder of Parmanand.

While the cause for the collapse is being assessed, the primary cause seems to be the continued heavy rainfall over the past few hours. During this incident, 4 vehicles were damaged, and 8 individuals received minor injuries and were provided immediate medical assistance. A compensation of Rs.20 Lakh to the family of the deceased, and Rs.3 Lakh each to those who received minor injuries announced by Delhi airport. The ruling BJP on Friday attacked the Congress in the Rajya Sabha, saying the Constitution always came under attack whenever the grand old party was in power and cited several instances, including the "changes" made in the Preamble.
