Kolkata Horror: Who Saw Abhaya's Body First, What Happened Next? Timeline by Cops

Who saw the victim's body first and what happened next - A complete timeline of the Abhaya Rape and Murder case has been given by the Kolkata Police.

Kolkata: Amid the ongoing investigation in the Kolkata Rape and Murder Case, the Kolkata Police has given an entire timeline - from who first saw Abhaya's body to what were the steps taken after that.

A trainee doctor was found dead in a semi-naked condition in the early hours of August 9, in the seminar room of Kolkata-situated RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

9:30 am: Dr. Sumitra Rai, who is a PGT 1st year student in the chest department, was on duty in the ward that day. Before the ward round, she reached the seminar hall in search of the victim. Sumitra Rai sees the body of the victim in an unconscious state from a distance. Then she informs her colleagues and senior doctor about this. After this, the hospital authority is informed.

10:10 am: Tala police station is informed by RG Kar Medical College and Hospital via telephone. In this call, information is given that the woman is lying in an unconscious state on a wooden platform in the seminar room of the chest ward. This ward is on the third floor of the emergency building. The woman is in a semi-nude state. This information was recorded in the police station's GD entry number 542 after which the policemen left for the scene of the incident from the police station.

10:30 am: Policemen from the police station reach the crime scene and take stock of the situation. The police officer gathers information about the victim and immediately informs his senior officer. After this, the crime scene is immediately secured to prevent contamination.

10:52 am: The Assistant Superintendent of the hospital informs the victim's family over the phone and asks them to come to the hospital immediately.

11:00 am: The officer in charge of investigating this murder reaches the crime scene with the detective department team. They gather information about the facts and circumstances of what happened.

12:25 pm: The scientific wing of the detective department team reaches the crime scene and does photography and videography. The first photo was taken at 12:29 pm.

The fingerprint and footprint team of the scientific wing of the detective department reaches the crime scene. Senior officers of Kolkata Police also reach the crime scene. State FSL is also informed to visit the crime scene. Emergency medical officer is called to the spot and asked to examine the unconscious woman to see if she is alive or not.

12:44 pm: Emergency medical officer on duty declares the victim dead.

1:00 pm: FSL team and experts reach the crime scene. After reaching the crime scene, the team starts the examination; victim's parents and family members reach and meet the hospital authority.

1:10 pm: Victim's family members reach the seminar room after being informed by the hospital authority. After this, the body of the deceased is shown to them. At that time, the FSL team was inspecting the crime scene and photography was being done.

1:47 pm: Emergency medical officer prepares medical and death certificate of the deceased which is handed over to the police.

3:00 pm: The family members and college student friends of the deceased verbally demand legal action and post-mortem in the presence of a judicial magistrate. They also demand videography of the entire process.

3:55 pm:  The family of the deceased and the students of the college demanded in writing that the magistrate should take legal action and the postmortem should be conducted in the presence of a judicial magistrate.

4:10 pm: The judicial magistrate reaches the crime scene.

4:20 pm to 4:40 pm: Legal action (inquest) is started in the presence of the judicial magistrate. The body is removed from the crime scene and sent to the postmortem house.

4:45 to 4:56 pm: After removing the body, the crime scene is photographed and videographed. The FSL team inspects the crime scene again and collects evidence.

5:10 pm: There is a protest in the college and the body is sent to the mortuary for postmortem

6:00 pm: The dead body of the deceased reaches the mortuary

6:10 pm to 7:10 pm: A board of forensic doctors conduct the postmortem in the presence of a judicial magistrate. Autopsy surgeons collect and seize evidence from the body.

8:00 pm: Sniffer dogs from the dog squad inspect the crime scene.

8:37 pm To 8:52 pm: Scientific wing of the detective department does 3D mapping of the crime scene and its surroundings.

8:32 pm to 10:45 pm: Around 40 samples collected from the crime scene are seized by the fsl team. All these procedures are done in the presence of local witnesses while videography is being done. After the postmortem, the body is handed over to the family

11:45 pm: FIR is registered after the father's complaint while the body was being examined and the postmortem was going on, the investigation of the suspects began. All possible entry and exit routes of SOC were identified, CCTV locations were identified and cctv investigation was initiated. 11 persons were examined, including four doctor colleagues who were on duty with the victim that night.

This report was filed by Kolkata Police in an affidavit filed in the Calcutta High Court in which it is clear that at 10:10 am, the hospital administration informed the police about a body lying unconscious in the seminar hall, whereas the victim had died late at night.

Not only this, even after the incident was known, the police was called about 40 minutes late.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted on August 10 to investigate the case; prime accused Sanjoy Roy was also arrested on the same day.

Some CCTV footages were seized on August 11; six new members were added to the SIT on August 12 and on August 13, blood samples of the accused were taken.
