Kolkata Rape and Murder: As the spine-chilling rape and murder of 'Abhaya' near the one-month mark, protests demanding justice have intensified across West Bengal. Thousands of doctors formed a long human chain, expressing their outrage and seeking justice for the 31-year-old trainee doctor who was brutally assaulted and killed at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. Demonstrations are expected to continue today, with Abhaya's parents reportedly planning to join the protests this evening. On Tuesday, the All India Federation of Government Doctors' Associations (AIFGDA) called for swift justice in the case. Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court is scheduled to hold a joint hearing today on several PILs related to the alleged rape and murder, as well as the vandalism at the institution last month.
This comes a day after Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Hospital was suspended by the West Bengal government amid investigation in the rape and murder case of the 31-year-old trainee doctor. "In view of the ongoing criminal investigation against professor Dr. Sandip Ghosh, ex-principal, RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, is placed under suspension under rule 7(1c) of West Bengal services (classification, control and appeal) rules, 1971 with immediate effect," it said.
Meanwhile, earlier Sandip was sent to 8-day CBI custody in the RG Kar Hospital financial irregularities case and attacked outside a Kolkata court.

- Thousands of protesters on Tuesday gathered across Kolkata and formed a 13-km-long human chain to demand justice for 'Abhaya' following the horrific incident that occurred on August 9 in the RG Kar Hospital.
- Former principal of RG Kar Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, has been suspended by the West Bengal government amid an investigation into the Kolkata rape-murder case. This comes a day after the CBI on Monday arrested the former principal and three others in connection with the alleged financial irregularities at the facility, which is under intense scrutiny over the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor there last month.
- The West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday afternoon passed a new anti-rape law- Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) Bill 2024.
- Meanwhile, the Centre has urged the Supreme Court to direct the West Bengal government to provide adequate facilities for the Central Industrial Security Forces (CISF) stationed at a Kolkata hospital.
