Kolkata: Amid the ongoing investigation into the Kolkata rape and murder case, doctors and forensic experts have suggested that the possibility of gangrape should be considered. According to these experts, the severity and nature of the victim’s injuries indicate that it may not have been the work of a single perpetrator.  "The multiple injuries suggest the involvement of more than one person," they stated while speaking to Republic Bangla. They stated that the brutality of the attack goes beyond a single individual’s capability, pointing to gangrape.

For the unversed, a semi-naked body of a doctor was found at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, has been arrested in connection with the case.

'150 mg Semen Found in Victim's Body'

The post-mortem of a 31-year-old doctor who was raped and killed detected a significant amount of fluid—likely semen—in her body, suggesting that she might have been assaulted by multiple individuals. While talking to a leading portal, Dr. Subarna Goswami, the additional general secretary of the All India Federation of Govt Doctors’ Association, said that the autopsy report indicated 151 milligrams of liquid from the vaginal swab.  "That quantity cannot be of one person. It suggests the involvement of multiple people", said Goswami.

‘Renovation Work’ Near Crime Scene

Meanwhile, it has come to light that renovation work was being carried out near the crime scene at the hospital.  A political controversy erupted soon after the matter came to light with BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya alleging that it was an attempt to destroy evidence against the accused which could have led the CBI investigating team to the 'murderers'.

"While West Bengal is seething with anger, given Mamata Banerjee's apathy and Kolkata Police’s botched cover-up attempt, RG Kar Medical College authorities break down room walls, inside the Chest Medicine Dept, where the on-duty junior doctor was subjected to brutal rape and murder, destroying what could be crucial circumstantial evidence, which could have led the CBI investigating team to the murderers(sic)", Malviya Wrote on X.

CBI Probe Underway

On the other hand, a team of senior CBI officers, who reached Kolkata on Wednesday morning, began its investigation into the case. The CBI team, which comprises medical and forensic experts, will visit the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital's seminar hall where the body of the trainee doctor was found on August 9.

Three groups of CBI officers have been formed to investigate the matter, a central agency official said. "One group will visit the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and talk to the witnesses and the doctors who were on duty on that night. Another team will take the arrested civic volunteer to a local court after medical tests and plea for his custody, while another will coordinate with the Kolkata Police sleuths who were conducting the investigation," he told PTI.

The Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the probe from the Kolkata Police to the central agency. A source in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said that the agency has filed an FIR under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in New Delhi in connection with the alleged rape and murder of the doctor.

"Today, our officers will seek the call details of the deceased woman and those on duty on that day. They may submit the FIR in a local court," another central agency source said.

Accused Sanjoy Roy Handed Over to CBI

The Kolkata Police handed over Sanjoy Roy, who was arrested in connection with the case, to the CBI at the CGO Complex here after his medical tests were conducted at the state-run SSKM Hospital.

Two CBI officers on Tuesday evening went to the Tala Police Station here and took documents related to the Kolkata Police's investigation. The court had on Tuesday directed the city police to hand over the case diary to the central probe agency by the evening, and all other documents by 10 am on August 14.
